Can You Have Sleep Apnea With a Normal Epworth Sleepiness Scale Score?


Why feeling fine doesn’t always mean you’re sleeping well.

Many people discover the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) while researching sleep apnea.

After answering the eight questions, they calculate their score and breathe a sigh of relief.

“I scored a 7. That’s normal. I guess I don’t have sleep apnea.”

Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple.

One of the most important things to understand about the ESS is that a normal score does not rule out obstructive sleep apnea.
